Song Format!

Today we are going to start putting our beats into song format. The format we will be using is:

INTRO 1-9
CHORUS 9-17
VERSE 17-33
CHORUS 33-41
VERSE 41-57
CHORUS 57-65
VERSE 65-81
CHORUS 81-89
OUTRO 89-97
  1. Open Reason.
  2. Open your beat you made yesterday.
  3. Make sure you have all your parts Copied To Track.
  4. Highlight all your parts.
  5. Go to the Edit Window, Select Copy.
  6. Go to the Edit Window, Select Paste.
  7. Move the Right Loop Point to 33.
  8. Paste your parts until you get to the Right Loop Point.
  9. Save your beat.
  10. Now focus on the INTRO, 1-9. Your intro is the first impression people get when they hear your song. It's like when you meet someone for the very first time, you can't tell the person your life story in a sentence, but you can give them an idea about you and your personality in the way that you greet them.

The best intros make the listener want to hear more, the worst make the listener skip to the next song. The intro usually drops one of the parts from the beat. If you drop the drums or the bass line, it can cause some tension, and bring the listener in.
  11. Focus on the Intro from 1-9.
  12. Delete a part such as the drums or bass line to "Introduce" your beat.
  13. Save your beat.
  14. Now we can work on the Verse.
  15. Remember, from yesterday, the verse is the part of the song that tells the story and is different every time.
  16. We want to create space for a vocalist in our verse.
  17. From 17-33, delete the melody from your song.
  18. Now, we have 3 sections. The Intro from 1-9, the Chorus from 9-17, and the Verse from 17-33.
  19. Highlight all the parts between 9-33.
  20. In the Edit window, select Copy.
  21. In the Edit window, select Paste two times.
  22. Now Highlight all the parts between 9-17.
  23. In the Edit window, select Copy.
  24. Move your cursor to 81.
  25. In the Edit window, select Paste.
  26. From 81-89 Create an Outro by deleting all the parts except for your melody.
  27. Save your beat!
  28. Let me know when you're finished so that I can check your work!
Congratulations, you've made your first full beat!

Song Format (Making a full beat)

Yesterday I talked with you all about full songs and what they contain. As a reminder, a full song usually contains the following: an intro, a chorus, verses and an outro. Sometimes there's also a bridge. Today I want to begin what will be our first full beats in the class. Before we can make a full beat, we need to make all of our parts, so we'll start by doing that today. Lets get started.

1. Open Reason

2. Create an MClass Mastering Suite Combi

3. Create a Mixer 14:2

4. Set your tempo in between 70-110

5. Create a Redrum. Make a 32 step beat using a clap/snare, a bass drum, a hi hat, and a percussion. Set your "Right Loop Point" to R5. Copy your pattern to track, then click the "pattern" button.

6. Create a Combinator. Pick a Synth Lead of your choice.

7. When you are ready, record your melody. Quantize it, then use the Pencil tool to draw a box around your melody. This will make it easier for when we begin to turn the beat into a full song.

8. Now create a synthesizer of your choice (a synthesizer is the NN19, NNXT, Subtractor, Malstrom, or Combinator). Record yourself playing in a 2nd melody. Don't forget to quantize it and draw a box around it.

9. Create a Dr. REX Loop Player. Load in a Dr. REX Percussion Loop and put it to track.

When you are finished, you should have a 32 step Redrum beat on the track, 2 melodies on the track, and 1 Dr. REX loop on the track. SAVE YOUR BEATS as (your name) full beat. We will start working on turning these into full beats on Thursday.

Chords with Black Keys

Yesterday we started working on using chords with the keyboard. I heard a lot of good work! However, there is one thing I want you guys to remember and that's when you're playing a chord, you're pressing all the keys in the chord at the same time. So now that we have had some practice playing chords in with the white keys of the keyboard, today lets use the black keys of our keyboards to make a chord melody. Here we go!

1. Open Reason

2. Create Mixer 14:2

3. Set your tempo in between 80-110.

4. Create a Redrum.

Chords

Welcome back! I hope you enjoyed your thanksgiving break. If you remember, the last thing we did in this class was a quiz on making our own original melodies using the keyboards. This week, we are going to expand on that with an exercise using a method called chords. Chords can be complex or simple but, the thing to remember is that there are 2 SCALES: MAJOR & MINOR. That means that there are MAJOR & MINOR CHORDS. To make a chord, you're going to use more than one key on the keyboard at a time. Some chords have 2 keys, 3 keys, 4 keys, etc. Today we're going to do major chords. If you remember, the major scale is all the white keys, so we're going to make chords using the white keys of the keyboard. Lets get started!

1. Open Reason

2. Create Mixer 14:2

3. Set your tempo in between 80-110.

4. Create a Redrum.

5. Make a 32 step redrum beat using a clap (on 5 & 13), a bass drum (on 1 and 3-4
more boxes), a hi hat (anywhere), and a percussion (anywhere).

6. Copy your pattern to track, then click the pattern button.

7. Create an NN-XT Advanced Sampler.

8. Click on the folder: Go to Reason Factory Sound Bank: NN-XT Patches: Piano

9. Choose sound A Grand Piano.sxt

10. Play your Redrum beat & practice using a major chord with the keyboard.

11. When you are ready, set your Right Loop Point (R) to 5.

12. Record yourself playing your chords in. When you are finished, press the record button again to stop recording.

13. Click the quantize button.

14. Create a Dr. Rex Loop Player.

15. Load in a Dr. Rex Percussion Loop and put it To Track.

You have finished todays assignment. Good work!

Thursday Quiz Practice

It's that time again! Friday is a minimum day so...this Thursday we will be having a quiz on using the keyboard to make our own original melodies. I want to give you these next few days to practice. Lets get started! To help you out with using the keyboard, here is a picture of piano keys with each key/note labeled.

Notice how the white keys/notes are just letters but the black notes/keys end with a lower case b or a #? The lower case b means that this note is a MINOR note, The white keys are the MAJOR Notes. This will become helpful in the future.
  1. Open Reason
  2. Make sure you have a Mixer 14:2
  3. Set Tempo between 70-110 bpm

The Keyboard

The past 2 weeks we have been working with the keyboards using a Dr. Rex to change the melody of a Dr. Rex Loop. Some of you had an issue with hitting the keyboard and not hearing a sound. That was because of a certain thing on the keyboard called "Octave". Today we are going to make our own melodies using the Keyboard. Almost every "Octave" should play a sound when using a Combinator, NNXT, NN19, Subtractor, or Malstrom. Today, we will be making Redrum drum beats and using the Subtractor to add our own original melody. Lets get started!

Did you notice that the keyboard looks like the Matrix?

I want you to make a 2 bar melody using between 3-5 notes with a Redrum drum beat.
  1. Open Reason
  2. Make sure you have a Mixer 14:2
  3. Set Tempo between 70-110 bpm
  4. Create a Redrum and make a 32 step drum pattern using a Clap or Snap, Bass Drum, Hi Hat, and Percussion. Make sure you put the sounds on appropriate boxes!

Halloween 3425: The Curse of Reason 3.0

Are you scared yet? Today we're going to be using a sample from the movie Halloween and making our own remixes to it. There is 2 ways this can be done....1) Copying the loop to track or 2) Using the keyboard to make your own melody out of the sample. I recommend using the keyboard with this loop. Okay, with that being said, grab your theoretical knife, grab your theoretical mask, put on your theoretical jumpsuit and KILL (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)...this beat!

1. ) Download the 2 Dr. Rex Loops from the following links: http://www.zshare.net/download/506932732bf9e493/ & http://www.zshare.net/download/50693307ed9689a8/

Redrum Double Time

Today we're going to do something different with the Redrum. Normally we make our Redrum beats with claps on 5 & 13 but, today we're going to make our Redrum a "Double Time" beat. A double time beat is a beat that normally would be at a slow tempo but is twice as fast. It may sound complicated but you'll see that once you start it can be very simple.

1. Open Reason
2. Create a Mixer 14:2
3. Set your tempo between 65-75.
4. Create a Redrum
5. Now, change the RESOLUTION of the Redrum to 1/32. This will turn the beat into a double time beat.
6. Pick any snare or clap you want and put it on box 9.
7. Pick any bass drum you want and put it on box 1 AND 3 to 4 more boxes of your choice.
8. Pick any hi hat you want and put the hi hat on any of the boxes you want.
9. Now change your steps to 32 and more your EDIT STEPS button to 17-32.
10. Repeat steps 6-8.
11. Once you've finished your 32 step double time beat, copy it to track.
12. Create a Dr. Rex and load in any percussion loop & put it to track.
13. Create a Malstrom or Combinator and choose any Monosynth or Polysynth of your choice.
14. Create a Matrix and make your own 8, 16, or 32 step melody.
15. Copy it to track.
16. Save your beat as (your name) double time.
